Equine practice is a hybrid practice between rural and pet practice.  It is most often performed on an outpatient basis, and requires that the veterinarian be highly available to respond quickly to emergency situations and have mobile equipment (e.g. imaging equipment).

T

he most serious cases or those requiring specialized examinations are treated in private or university clinics where several specialized veterinarians practice. The value of the horse, donkey or pony being cared for is not only based on the attachment of its owner: it also depends on its financial value determined by its sporting abilities and/or its genetic potential.

A small proportion of veterinarians devote their practice exclusively to equine medicine, but many veterinarians practice in equine medicine as a mixed practice (equine and companion animals or equine and rural).
