Our strengths

Veterinary medicine studies comprise two three-year cycles. The first cycle leads to a bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine (BMV), while the second cycle leads to a degree in veterinary medicine (GMV). The University of Liège is the only French-speaking university in Belgium to offer these two cycles and award the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
It integrates the entire program on a single campus, thereby ensuring unparalleled educational continuity throughout the course of study.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has unrivalled infrastructure for teaching and research. In addition to spacious premises, lecture theaters, dedicated computer rooms, a restaurant, and a specialized library, it offers an exceptional learning environment thanks to its research laboratories, educational farm, and treatment and hospitalization clinics. These clinics treat all species, from the most "traditional" (pets and farm animals) to the most "unusual" (turtles, snakes, iguanas, etc.), providing students with a wide range of "patients" for their veterinary training and practice.

Covering an area of 5,670 m², these university clinics are unique in the Brussels and Walloon regions and equipped with the latest generation of diagnostic and treatment tools: practical work rooms, medical imaging (radiology, CT scan, MRI, etc.), consultation rooms, hospitalization and intensive care units, five operating rooms, isolated areas for contagious animals, a hydrotherapy room, etc. All the facilities have been designed to facilitate teaching: live broadcasts of operations, mini-auditoriums for consultations, etc.

From the very beginning of their studies, each student evolves in a veterinary environment and has the opportunity to get involved: managing farmyard animals, flocks of sheep, teaching horses, and caring for calves from birth, etc.

Practical skills are essential for future veterinarians. In order to train students to perform the most appropriate practical, technical, and clinical procedures, the Faculty has a space equipped with artificial models and mannequins.

European standards recommend practicing on mannequins before performing procedures on live animals as part of high-quality education. Simulation creates conditions conducive to progressive learning at the student's own pace, without any potential negative impact on animal health or welfare.

In addition to its numerous mannequins and animal models of different species, the Skill Lab is equipped with a consultation room and an observation room separated by a one-way mirror. This setup allows students to develop decision-making and interpersonal skills in veterinary consultations through role-playing observed by peers and tutored by an interdisciplinary team of teachers (veterinarians, psychologists, and educators).
In this way, the Skill Lab allows students to be better prepared for their first consultations with real patients in the presence of their owners.

From the first block of the bachelor's degree, all courses, including those devoted to basic sciences, have been designed for veterinary medicine students, which allows the fundamental concepts taught to be illustrated from the outset using concrete examples from veterinary medicine. In addition, thanks to collaboration between teachers of fundamental and clinical sciences, students receive instruction that combines these two dimensions from the very first block.

The vast majority of teachers hold doctorates in veterinary medicine. The close link with the reality of the profession is also reflected in the internships that students undertake with professionals in the sector, who are generally former students of ULiège, as well as in practical clinical activities supervised by practicing veterinarians who have excellent field expertise in often highly specialized areas (surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, sports medicine, etc.). In addition, by working in the various clinics on campus, students put their theoretical knowledge into practice in real-life situations and cases.

Finally, throughout their studies, students are supported by enthusiastic and motivated teachers who are able to share the specialized knowledge they have acquired through their daily work in international-level research in all scientific fields related to veterinary medicine (nutrition, genetics, virology, veterinary public health, etc.).

Numerous projects, initiated and led by both students and teaching staff, punctuate life at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. They promote exchanges between students as well as collaboration between professors and students.
For example, by participating in the organization of Vétérinexpo, students learn about the different facets of veterinary medicine by coming into contact with professionals in the sector. Many students are also involved in organizing conferences or festive events (graduation gala, participation in the 24-hour Télévie bike ride, student folklore activities, etc.), which make life at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine a unique experience.

In addition to the many support measures put in place at ULiège, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has developed a specific project to support new students, called PEPPS. Based on sharing experiences, this program aims to promote the success of first-year students through support and coaching from older students. It is particularly user-friendly and effective.
