Biography

Professor D. Marlier became a veterinary surgeon in 1990. He then obtained a Doctorate in Veterinary Sciences (PhD) in 2000 for a researches on amyxomatous myxoma virus strains and their role in the aetiology of respiratory diseases in rabbits. Then he obtained in 2003 the training certificate of experienced master (category C).

In 2009, Professor Marlier became the first Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine in the Walloon Region and one of the only two veterinarians agreed as Veterinary Specialist in Zoological Medicine (small mammals) in Belgium. Since 2014, Professor Marlier was officialy agreed to train residents to take them for the European College of Zoological Medicine examination for small mammals. In 2020, there are only 6 centers approved at European level to provide this training. To date, Professor Marlier has trained a resident (Dr Deflers) and participated in the training of a second resident (Dr Gandar) who have both passed very brilliantly their respective ECZM exams, the first in small mammal medicine and the second in herpetology. Currently Professor Marlier has started the training of a third resident, Dr Thilliez who is assistant in the Department of Zoological Medicine at CVU.

Along with his activities in Zoological Medicine, Professor Marlier has always been actively involved in poultry and farmed rabbits, regardless of farm sizes. In this context and in anticipation of structural changes in food production, Professor Marlier followed specific training and obtained in 2019 a university certificate in Urban and Peri-Urban agriculture.

Professor Marlier heads the departments of Zoological Medicine and the Avian Clinic and supervises the resident in Zoological Medicine. It provides, on request, consultations and autopsies in zoological medicine (small mammals and pet birds), pigeon medicine and small farm animals.

Prof. Marlier's fields of research are
- pathologies of lagomorphs, namely systemic infectious diseases (myxomatosis), diseases of the digestive system (epizootic enteropathy) and of the respiratory system
- pathologies of palmipeds: specifically health, zootechnical and animal welfare aspects in the production of ¿foie gras¿ as part of economically viable production
- anesthesia and pain management in zoological medicine (new pets), mainly in rabbits and rodents
- the fight against malnutrition. In this context, Professor Marlier is a partner of a Research Project for Development (PRD) entitled "Contribution to the fight against malnutrition of children and women in underprivileged Haitian agricultural settings
