Biography
Professor D. Marlier became a veterinary surgeon in 1990. In 2000, he completed a Doctorate in Veterinary Science (PhD), focusing on the study of amyxomatous myxoma virus strains and their role in the aetiology of respiratory diseases in rabbits. In 2003, he received the training certificate of experienced master (category C), and in 2009, he became the first Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine in the Walloon Region. Anticipating structural changes in some specific food production systems, particularly in poultry and rabbit farming, he followed a specific training and obtained in 2019 a university certificate in Urban and Peri-Urban agriculture.
Since 2023, Professor Marlier has devoted his activities exclusively to poultry and production rabbits medicine, regardless of farming scale, as well as to pigeon medicine (sport, ornamental, and breeding). He heads the Avian Medicine Service, attached to the Department of Veterinary Management of Animal Resources, where he also provides, upon request, specialized consultations in pigeon medicine and for poultry and rabbit farming.
Chronologically, Professor Marlier¿s research was initially directed towards the study of lagomorph pathologies, in particular systemic infectious diseases such as myxomatosis, as well as digestive disorders (notably epizootic rabbit enteropathy) and respiratory conditions. Equally central to his scientific work has been the investigation of pathologies in waterfowl, with a particular focus on sanitary, zootechnical and animal welfare aspects, especially within the context of foie gras production, approached from the perspective of sustainability and economic viability.
At present, his research is mainly concentrated on two axes: firstly, the study of the relationship between the homing ability of pigeons and their sporting performance; and secondly, the development of sustainable poultry systems in the Global South. In this regard, he is a partner in two Research for Development Projects (PRD): ¿Construction and dissemination of integrated agro-silvo-pastoral practices to improve the resilience of traditional cattle and poultry farming in northern and central Benin¿ and ¿Development and promotion of innovative functional foods based on local resources for sustainable poultry productivity in Burkina Faso¿.
Through his teaching and research, Professor Marlier contributes to the advancement of veterinary medicine, the development of sustainable poultry and rabbit production systems, and the progress of scientific knowledge in pigeon sports medicine.
