Biography

Prof. Alain Vanderplasschen is Director of the Immunology and Vaccinology Laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Liege. He was Director of Research at the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (F.R.S.-FNRS). His research focuses on host-pathogen relationships in the animal world. In 2016, he was the first veterinary surgeon to receive the GSK Vaccines prize, which was awarded in particular for his work on carp herpesvirus. This work has led to the development of novel veterinary vaccines that address significant challenges, as carp is one of the most important fish raised for human consumption in Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and is an economic and dietary mainstay for millions of people around the world. At present, the laboratory is also working on eels, a new line of research that combines both scientific and economic challenges.
