On 18 December, at the end of FARAH Day, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at ULiège inaugurated a stele entitled “Maître Renard, le Virus de la Rage et le Chercheur” (Master Fox, the Rabies Virus and the Researcher) in tribute to Professor Paul-Pierre Pastoret, who died in April 2015.

n the initiative of Prof. Alain Vanderplasschen, for whom Paul-Pierre Pastoret was a mentor, the monument combines a massive stone with two bronze works by American sculptor Georgia Gerber: a fox, a nod to the oral vaccination campaigns that led to the official elimination of fox rabies in Europe, and a representation of the rabies virus.
The project, which had been in preparation for a long time, was carried out entirely by Prof. Alain Vanderplasschen's laboratory. "It is a fitting tribute to a great scientist of the University: the stone illustrates the robustness of the man and his scientific work, while the fox in the foreground of the virus symbolises the resolution of this public health problem. This monument will remain a permanent testimony for every visitor to the faculty," emphasises Alain Vanderplasschen.
Professor Emeritus, former Director of the Institute for Animal Health in the United Kingdom and then Director of Publications at the OIE in Paris, Paul-Pierre Pastoret contributed to the development of the oral vaccine against fox rabies. Author of more than 700 publications, he leaves a lasting mark on ULiège, now symbolised by this stele.
